The city of Tumaco is located on the Pacific coast of Colombia and is fiercely fought over. It is one of the municipalities with the largest coca production in the country. Drug dealers, guerrilla groups, and paramilitary forces rival each other for these lucrative growing areas and smuggling routes. These armed groups force small farmers to grow coca and recruit young people from the poorer neighborhoods of Tumaco. Due to the lack of both infrastructure and job prospects in this region, drug trafficking and prostitution often appear to be the only means of earning a living.
In the neighborhood of Nuevo Milenio in Tumaco, the situation is particularly dire: medical care and drinking water are scarce, as are public meeting places. There is no restaurant for the neighborhood's 8'000 residents.
This is where the Cuisine sans frontières' project comes in: The snack bar "Piqueteadero" of the Centro Afro Juvenil will be expanded into a gastronomic meeting place and event venue. The current take-away offer will be broadened, and around 20 seats will be created. The kitchen infrastructure will also be upgraded in order to serve a wider range of meals.
At the same time, three teenagers from the center are taking part in a gastronomic training in the areas of kitchen, service and marketing. They thus acquire the necessary skills to permanently in the "Piqueteadero" and actively develop it further.
