The region around Orwa in northwest Kenya constitutes the border region of the Pokot and Turkana tribes. Violent clashes occur frequently along these borders between the tribes over cattle-theft and, increasingly over the last years, due to disputes over pasture and access to water.
On the outskirts of the village of Orwa, on the main road between Kenya and South Sudan, Cuisine sans frontières is building the gastronomic community centre Calabash. The centre includes a restaurant, sleeping accommodation for small and large groups, wet areas, a garden and a small herd of goats.
A team consisting of members of both the Pokot and Turkana tribes leads the centre. In addition to the daily restaurant business they organise monthly events, which attract several hundred visitors on a regular basis. The centre provides a neutral meeting ground for Pokot and Turkana, local chiefs and politicians.
