«Sometimes I think they’re just just drops in the ocean. But when I hear that since we built our kitchen in San Josecito the children are no longer malnourished, that landless indigenous people have found work in a hotel and in the North West Rift Valley in Kenya the enemy peoples Pokot and Turkana dance at our festival, it confirms that this self-imposed task makes sense. When I see the enthusiasm of the people at the Kitchen Battles in Switzerland, then it seems to me that only the right starting point is needed to make the world a better place with a simple idea.»
David Höner, founder and long-time president of Cuisine sans frontières.
Cuisine sans frontières was founded in 2005 as a non-profit association. The idea came from David Höner, cook, tango dancer, journalist and author. In his book "Der Victoriabarsch" he wrote down the history of Kredenzias Gilde in 2004. Monique Zumbrunn, still a member of the board of Cuisine sans frontières, read the book and said: "If you do what you wrote, I'll help you do it". Said and done. With Charles Leuthold as the third in the group, they founded Cuisine sans frontières and thus laid the foundation stone for an organization whose core David Höner describes in this way:
Cooking and eating together is a social act - worldwide. A common meal promotes friendships, can heal splits and is a platform for discussion and exchange - the basis for a good life together.
This communal meal needs space, a room. In many places it is a simple restaurant, a pub. This is where life takes place: People fall in love, quarrel and reconcile, weddings are celebrated just like funerals. Where these rooms are missing, an important social element is lost.
This is exactly where Cuisine sans frontières comes in: Where there are no more bars, we rebuild them. Social hospitality as an intercultural contribution. In this way we strengthen civil society and promote peace. Our projects are the neutral gastronomic platform that offers space and opportunities in conflict and social crisis areas. The opportunity to settle conflicts at the table. The opportunity to find a job. The opportunity to experience a piece of normality in difficult times.
This is Cuisine sans frontières, host of hope. Since 2005.
