The refugee camp of Burj el Barajneh is situated south of the
Lebanese capital of Beirut. It covers an area of around one square
kilometre and has been providing for refugees since 1948. Up until
recently they came mainly from Palestine but since the outbreak of the
war in Syria the number of inhabitants has risen from 26'000 to 50'000.
Meanwhile the grounds have not been extended and people have to live in
close quarters. Poverty is widespread and conflicts between the refugees
and the local population are becoming more frequent. This is where
Cuisine sans frontières comes in.
Csf offers simple gastronomic training to groups of women refugees. Here, they learn about work in a gastronomic environment, preserving foods, preparing a balanced menu plan as well as the basics of business administration. Equipped with this know-how the women will build up a catering service.
This catering service provides course participants with a new source of income from which they and their families will profit.
